Streets for All is Greater Manchester's new approach to planning the streets of Greater Manchester
‘Streets for All’
Streets for All is Greater Manchester's new approach to planning the streets of Greater Manchester - re-thinking the role of streets in creating sustainable, healthy and resilient places and changing the way engineers approach street design – actively designing in active travel.. The initiative looks to create streets that better balance the movement of people and goods with the creation of more people-friendly places.
As a holistic approach, Streets for All moves away from planning for transport modes, and towards putting people first to better shape and manage our streets. This will help us create more sustainable, healthy and resilient places across Greater Manchester; overall leading to an improved quality of life for those who live, work and visit.
To support this new approach, Greater Manchester will be publishing a Streets for All Strategy complemented by a Streets for All Design Guide, which will support the application of this new approach across Greater Manchester - This will establish key principles for new streets based on street type and local needs, identify best practice to support scheme design, delivery and maintenance, and provide an audit tool to ensure proposals meet the needs of all people who use our streets. Implementation will be supported by workforce development, building on the strengths of TfGM’s Bee a Champion programme.
GM’s Big Active Conversation in June 2021, provided an open opportunity for the people of Greater Manchester to see the emerging strategy and offer challenge and feedback to ensure it really does work for all.
GM Moving’s Strategic Director Eve Holt was part of a three-person team responsible for co-authoring a chapter on active travel.
The latest Active Lives Children and Young People (CYP) Survey data from Sport England for the academic year 2023-24 have been released. The national data indicates that physical activity levels remain stable with 47% of CYP being active.
