GreaterSport is seeking expressions of interest from institutions and organisations to carry out the aims of our research brief.
GreaterSport is seeking to understand the Greater Manchester (GM) volunteering landscape in sport, activity and movement. The aim is to specifically understand what is needed to make giving time easy, meaningful and supported by working alongside the VCSE sector to develop a systemic approach to volunteering across GM. We are seeking to understand:
Volunteering plays a big role in supporting the health, well-being and activity levels of people and communities across GM through the individual benefits of volunteering and their collective contribution to society. People who volunteer their time are the backbone of sport and physical activity in GM. Helpers, volunteers, champions, referees - all leaders in their own right and all sharing their time with people to transform their community. The well-being of GM’s residents depends on how we enable more people, and a greater diversity of people, to volunteer within sport and physical activity.
Expressions of interest close – 5pm 25th March.

Research Brief FAQ’s (we will keep adding to this list throughout the process)
Q - What support/access can GreaterSport offer to engage various stakeholders and research participants?
A - GreaterSport can support engagement via our funded groups, Local Pilot network, walking groups and CYP Satellite Clubs. We are also connected with 10GM and the network of VCSE organisations.
Q - What advice can be given surrounding the inclusion of incentives for research participant recruitment within the budget?
A - We suggest that incentives are likely to be audience specific – our support would be sufficient to recruit some participants without incentive, but not all, therefore we would recommend budgeting and allowing for flexibility to provide incentives where GreaterSport can’t support.
Q - What does GreaterSport mean by ‘work alongside VCSE sector organisations?
A - Formal inclusion from VCSE Sector organisations would be ideal, but inclusion of groups as participants in focus groups would be sufficient.
A - We are looking to establish an advisory groups to collaborate with the research team to support the implementation of the findings across GM that will include representatives from 10GM, volunteer centres and volunteer involving organisations. Our aim is for this group to work alongside the research team.
Q - How should VCSE strategic partners be incorporated into the research methodology?
A - GreaterSport can support the coordination of a partnership between the research team and VCSE strategic partners by identifying and making connections. We would expect the facilitation of these partners to feed into the research methodology that will be undertaken by the research team.
Q - In the methodology section, what does GreaterSport mean by ‘methods of engagement’?
A - We are referring to the means of engaging participants with the research – e.g. social media, face to face, surveys etc.
Q - Will GreaterSport provide permission to publish an academic article using some of the data obtained from the research after the conclusion of the project?
A - Yes, if we are referenced in some way.
