More than 100 health and care partners came together on Thursday (13 June) to connect with new and developing approaches to embed movement into health systems in Greater Manchester.

The online event brought together colleagues from local authorities, primary care, public health, and leisure, with NHS GM, Active Partnerships, and national partners.

Hosted by GM Moving, the session demonstrated the connectivity between three key strategies: Sport England’s national strategy, GM Moving in Action, and the new GM NHS Integrated Care Partnership strategy.

Work continues locally, regionally, and nationally to develop, spread, and grow approaches that support movement and physical activity playing its fullest role in improving health and care.

In addition, the event created an important space for partners to share stories and progress, review learning and evidence, and connect with other partners to drive this agenda forward.

What happened on the day?

Strategic Director for GM Moving Beth Sutcliffe and Associate Director of Population Health at NHS GM Dave Boulger opened the session with a strategic overview of the ongoing work.

Approaches around Active Practices and Physical Activity Clinical Champions were shared by GM Moving colleagues with Michelle Childs sharing GM Active’s successes through the Prehab4Cancer programme.

There was also an opportunity for the audience to learn more about the eight pragmatic responses which research has shown to be key drivers for change in this space.

The responses were brought to life through examples from Shelly Caulfield, Wellness Services Manager at Live Well Bury and Alastair McGregor, former CEO of Creative Living Centre.

Where’s this work come from?

GM Moving has a long-standing relationship with health and care partners in Greater Manchester.

Two years ago, in July 2022, as part of the Active Partnership Network’s collective work around health and inactivity, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire colleagues hosted a sharing and learning community event.

Similar, learning events have taken place in Birmingham (September 2022) and Greater Manchester (September 2023). A recap of the latter is available on YouTube here.

What next?

More information, including stories to share, on embedding movement and physical activity into health and care systems across Greater Manchester is available on our website.

GM Moving are working with Substance on the final elements of a new report focusing on the stories which bring to life the eight pragmatic responses which can drive change.
