The GM Walking and Wheeling Fund 2024-25 is now open for applications.

The fund improves the health and wellbeing of Greater Manchester communities by encouraging people who are less active or inactive to walk or wheel (e.g. using a wheelchair/mobility aid or pushing a pram) regularly.

Groups, organisations, and charities can apply for medium grants (up to £5,000) before the deadline of Friday 7 October or small grants (up to £2,000) ahead of the Friday 18 October closing date.

Guided by Active Lives data, grants are given to those working with communities that are less active or inactive, including people with disabilities or long-term health conditions, people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and people from lower socio-economic groups.

The GM Walking and Wheeling Fund is supported by the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership and is particularly interested in applications that link in with the health and care system.

Over the past 5 years, the GM Walking and Wheeling Fund has distributed more than £400,000 in 166 grants, including nearly 100 small grants (up to £2,000).

More information is available on the GM Walking website, our hub of walking/wheeling information and resources that recognises the important role walking and wheeling plays in increasing physical activity levels.

This includes stories from previous recipients of our grant funding as well as impact reports to help you understand more about the investment and how it can support you.

Carole Pollard, Community Walking Lead at GM Moving, said:

"This year's funding feels more important than ever following recent events which may have left people feeling worried about walking or wheeling in public spaces.

"We hope to see lots of creative ideas to support people to walk or wheel regularly in a way that works for them and know group-settings can be an important factor in this.

"We also know lots of people struggle to stay active during the winter for a variety of reasons but that moving more can improve mood, energy, and reduce depressive symptoms.

"Being part of the GM Walking and Wheeling Fund can be a great way to support your community to beat those winter blues, get moving, and have some fun along the way."

Meet the Funder

Salford CVS, who manage the grants on behalf of 10GM, and GM Moving will host two online sessions to discuss the funding in more detail, including how to apply for a grant, and tips and tricks on a strong application.

The sessions will take place online on Wednesday 11 September (6-7pm) and Tuesday 24 September (11am-12pm) and you can register to attend now.
