Strategic Director - GM Moving
Job role: My role is to provide strategic leadership for GM Moving, as a movement for movement, facilitating a whole system approach to physical activity. This includes convening the system, shining a light on what works and growing advocacy across all sectors e.g. transport, planning, education, leisure. Helping us to lead, learn, move and work together, effectively, as one GM team, dismantling the barriers people face to movement and sport and enabling Active Lives for All.
Date joined: February 2020
Professional background: My first career was as solicitor in human rights and public law, providing representation and advocacy initially in criminal defence, immigration and asylum matters, then later focusing on health, mental health, social care and education cases. I retrained after 15yrs as a lawyer, as a system coach and facilitator and established Happen Together CIC.
Alongside my GM Moving role, I am a Councillor on Manchester City Council, a school governor and trustee on a number of boards and a volunteer at various community projects. This helps keep me grounded and rooted in the community which is very important to me. I am a passionate advocate for everyday moving, active travel, equality and the environment.
Fun Fact: I love to play and dance. I grew up on the canals, streets and adventure playgrounds of Manchester as my parents were both youth and play workers. This has shaped my view of place and my love of Greater Manchester. I am an occasional poet, writer and performer.
