In Greater Manchester, one in five people are disabled or have a long-term health condition.

The latest Sport England data (Active Adults Survey 2023), shows us that those with a long-term health condition or who are disabled are amongst the most inactive groups in Greater Manchester.

This inactivity is exacerbated by physical, social, structural, and cultural barriers disabled people face in society, that prevent them from being active.

An example of such a barrier is eight in ten providers say they have no experience of delivering activity to disabled people or people with long-term conditions. This can lead to low levels of confidence and knowledge in those delivering activities catering for those with a disability.

Greater Manchester Moving in Action aims to deliver active lives for all and moving matters for everyone. We recognise that steps need to be taken to tackle the inequalities disabled people face in becoming more active and reaping the benefits movement and physical activity can provide.

GM Commitment to Inclusion Group

GM Moving and partners are committed to reducing the inequalities faced by disabled people in becoming more active and have come together to create the GM Commitment to Inclusion Group.

This group aims to get activity providers from across Greater Manchester on the same page when it comes to providing inclusive provision to disabled people. Within this group we aim to:

  • Provide a space for disabled people, disabled people’s organisations, and activity providers to come together to share successes, learning, and challenges and work through them together
  • Show examples of inclusive practice through partner visits within the region
  • Support of Activity Alliance’s LEAD approach in Greater Manchester, to support leisure providers through self-assessment and action plan towards providing inclusion provision for disabled people.

Anyone is welcome to join and get involved in this work if it feels as though it might be of interest and relevant to you.

If you would like to be a part of the group, please contact us.
