The Youth Justice Fund worked to engage with young people (aged 10 to 17) who were vulnerable to getting involved in criminal activities, displaying anti-social behaviour, and engaging in violence by engaging them in community physical activity and sport.
Focus areas: Radcliffe
Partners: Bury Youth Services
Bury youth services were leading on Bury’s investment and broke up the funding to create a provision over three nights a week, in community centres in Radcliffe.
They partnered with Bury lads and girls club for equipment, and had a focus on taking young people out to sports providers in the borough in hopes the young people will access the activity long-term.
This is a primary and secondary provision as the youth club style were universal, but the youth workers were recruiting young people from their social care referrals and “team around the families”.
Bury Youth Service have used this project as a pathway into wider youth provision, for young people involved in youth justice and looked after children.
Understanding the importance of robust partnerships, Bury Youth Services collaborated with Bury Lads and Girls Club to
procure essential equipment. This strategic alliance not only bolstered the available resources but also demonstrated a
holistic approach to fostering community growth.
The synergy between the two organizations amplified the reach and impact of the initiative. The young people always went on a summer residential to engage in out door education, water sports and youth leadership and physical activity.
Bury youth service staff had powered through some capacity issues, and restructures, to priorities this field of work. The programme's universal youth club style was tailored to embrace participants from a variety of backgrounds.
While the format was welcoming to all, the youth workers meticulously identified potential participants from social care referrals and the "team around the families" network. This approach ensured that those who could benefit the most from the initiative were given the opportunity to thrive.
Bury Youth Services' multi-dimensional approach to youth engagement stands as a testament to effective investment, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to fostering holistic development.
By creating accessible provisions, forging alliances, and promoting long-term engagement, the initiative not only empowered the local youth but also opened pathways to broader opportunities, creating a legacy of growth and transformation.
