The Youth Justice Fund worked to engage with young people (aged 10 to 17) who were vulnerable to getting involved in criminal activities, displaying anti-social behaviour, and engaging in violence by engaging them in community physical activity and sport.
Focus areas: Tonge Moor and Johnson Fold
Partners: Early Help Social Services and Bolton Wanderers in the Community.
Bolton Wanderers in the Community led the sport and activities on both project. The Johnsonfold was based on an estate which was under served by youth provision, and had an under used pitch.
The provision, being one of the few youth provisions in the local area, have brought about various transformative changes for participants.
Regular attendees have witnessed a remarkable improvement in their physical wellbeing, including cardiovascular fitness,
muscular strength, and endurance.
Beyond the physical benefits, participants have also honed essential life skills such as teamwork and effective communication, which are nurtured through their interactions on the football pitch.
“It’s a real challenge, but it’s worth it!”
Bolton Wanderers in the Community has not only been a platform for individual growth but a melting pot of diversity and
inclusion.
By drawing individuals from different backgrounds onto the same field, these football sessions break down barriers and promote a sense of unity.
This inclusive environment encourages cross-cultural interactions, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity within the community. These football sessions offer more than just sportsmanship; they serve as catalysts for leadership development.
Participants are presented with opportunities to take on leadership roles, both on and off the field. This dual-purpose approach not only contributes to the personal growth of participants but also strengthens the community fabric.
"I like being part of a team and doing something different to just having out on the street"
The success of the initiative is reflected in the high attendance rates, with numerous young people consistently engaging in the sessions. This regular participation is a testament to the effectiveness of the program and the value it brings to the lives of young individuals.
Beyond regular attendance, participants' eagerness to volunteer and advance within the club demonstrates the positive influence Bolton Wanderers in the Community has on their aspirations.
Through the power of football, it has brought together individuals from various backgrounds, nurtured leadership potential, and established a vibrant community where everyone has the chance to shine.
