Across Greater Manchester, there are thousands of people who, within their existing job roles, are able to influence people to move more. This could be HR directors, leisure centre staff, chief executives, sports coaches and many more. We want to upskill Greater Manchester’s professional workforce to help provide more opportunities for people to move more in their daily lives.

We are striving to support, develop and identify leaders across Greater Manchester who are comfortable working within a culture of change, where complexity is embraced, challenge is welcomed, and relationships become the foundation of progress.

We want this approach to transform the culture, behaviour, skills and knowledge of Greater Manchester’s workforce to address the challenge of inactivity.

GreaterSport working alongside GM Active, have developed an online resource to support the 6,500 people that are currently employed across Greater Manchester’s leisure trusts, as they pivot towards a new way of working as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Training resources have been developed for operational staff, which will support in three key ways:

  1. Deliver a bespoke workforce training programme to support and enable a transformation in the culture, knowledge, skills and behaviors of GM Active staff to address the challenge of inactivity.
  2. Establish a GM level framework for instructors supporting people with, or at risk of, long-term health conditions.
  3. Establish a tailored bespoke Healthy Conversations (Making Every Contact Count) programme, which will help GM Active staff understand their role and their importance in the customer journey.

Resources have also been developed to deliver a leadership programme which aims to bolster the knowledge and understanding of the GM Active ‘General Manager’ workforce to meet the demands of their role and the changing needs of the diverse communities across Greater Manchester. It will also ensure GM Active staff are fully equipped with the skills, confidence and empathy to deliver and lead on the new vision for wellbeing and people’s health.

Through this work, we want to inspire and empower the GM Active workforce to lead their teams and places to effect positive change in their local areas and help people across Greater Manchester live healthier, happier, and more fulfilled lives.

GM Moving System Leadership approach

There was a recognition from partners across the system that leading change and adapting to a whole system approach to reducing inactivity requires different skills and understanding within the professional workforce. Therefore, an approach has been developed with the aim of:

“Supporting and enabling a transformation in the culture, behaviours, skills, knowledge and capabilities of Greater Manchester’s workforces to address the challenge of inactivity”

Since early 2020, we have worked with a consortia of partners (MACC, Do Well and AQUA) to develop and deliver a transformational leadership development approach with the following outcomes:

  • More leaders in Greater Manchester will be leading in ways that are consistent with the Greater Manchester principles of reform and GM Moving’s pointers for leadership practice.
  • More leaders across the Greater Manchester system and sectors will see ‘people moving more’ as their business, and be contributing to the ambition of GM Moving through their work.
  • Support locality leads and direct delivery partners to make a step change in their confidence and skills in leading a system change

Across 20 virtual workshops and development sessions we have engaged with 166 participants from 73 different organisations and established peer to peer support sessions and action learning sets across Greater Manchester.
